What a solicitor can and can’t do for you

A solicitor can:

  • Listen to you, ensuring they understand what you mean;
  • Tell you what the law says in a way that you understand;
  • Give you choices about what you can do;
  • Help you decide what you want to do; and
  • Tell you about other services.

A solicitor can’t:

  • Fix all of your problems;
  • Spend unlimited time with you and on your legal issue;
  • Always say for sure what will happen;
  • Always do what you want them to do; and
  • Always make other people do the right thing.

The legal service has limited resources which may restrict the services that can be provided. There are some areas of the law that we are unable to cover and in these instances referrals will be made where possible.

Information for Young People

Pine Rivers Community Legal Service and Legal Aid QLD – Part 1 of Youth Chat – Access to Justice and Police

Often young people don’t get legal advice because they don’t know about legal services available to them.

This presentation looks at the meaning of justice and provides young people with practical information on free legal advice services in their community. It also explores some myths, facts,  do’s and don’ts when dealing with Police.

Pine Rivers Community Legal Service and Legal Aid QLD – Part 2 of Youth Chat – Sexting, Revenge Porn and Tenancy

In this digital age, it’s easy for pictures and information to be quickly spread using technology like our smartphones. However, “sexting” and “revenge porn” can be serious offences and it is important for young people to understand the law and the consequences.

This presentation also gives an overview of the processes and laws regarding tenancy which is important for young people to know as they move to independent living.

About:

As part of Encircle Ltd the Pine Rivers Community Legal Service assists more than 200 people every month to access free legal advice, information, document drafting, and referrals. We also provide free legal education in schools and to community groups.

The Pine Rivers Community Mental Health Legal Service has been recently established thanks to the funding received from the QLD government under the National Legal Assistance Partnership to support the early resolution of legal problems and improve access to the justice system for people who have a mental health condition.

The Mental Health Legal Service provides legal advice and support to vulnerable clients in the Moreton Bay region who have a mental health condition by increasing their awareness of how to access legal assistance, supporting them to address their legal problems in a timely manner, and assisting them to self-advocate.

We adopt a holistic approach to support clients with mental health conditions and collaborate with other service providers and professionals to facilitate appropriate referrals to best address client needs.

Staff Spotlight

Kristy is the Solicitor for the newly funded Mental Health Legal Service.

Prior to being admitted as a Solicitor in March 2018, I worked as a psychologist for over 10 years supporting clients impacted by crime and domestic and family violence. I assisted them to navigate the legal system and recover from the negative impacts on their mental health.

Since being admitted, I have worked in the areas of Criminal Law, Domestic and Family Violence, Child Protection, and Administrative Law.

I am excited to be a part of the PRCLS team as the Mental Health Solicitor. I am passionate about helping vulnerable clients with a mental health condition to access legal information and advice, and to assist them in the timely resolution of their legal matters. We can also refer clients to other services who can help.

In my spare time, I enjoy travelling and exploring new places and love to spend time with my family.
